Epigraphy of the Middle Mekong Valley:

This project, aimed at compiling an exhaustive inventory and editing Lao epigraphic sources, has involved field surveys across the seventeen provinces of Laos, as well as in the north-eastern border regions of Thailand. The research also brought to light inscriptions relating to the Khmer, Mon, Lü, Yuan and other cultural spheres. In total, this corpus comprises more than 800 documents, including some 140 Lao inscriptions on stelae.

Historiographical traditions of Lan Xang:

The recent discovery of new manuscripts – including chronicles dating from the 16th century – together with comparative analysis of epigraphic sources and dozens of previously unknown royal charters, now makes it possible to refine textual criticism and reconstruct with some confidence the process by which Lao historiographical traditions took shape. Furthermore, the identification of a large body of purely administrative data opens up new perspectives for understanding the socio-economic history of the ancient Lao region.

Khmer and Mon archaeology in Laos:

Field surveys carried out in the southern and central provinces of Laos have identified some 80 new sites containing archaeological remains associated with the Khmer (5th–13th centuries) and Mon (c. 7th–11th centuries) cultural spheres. Some of these are of major importance for our understanding of the earliest history of mainland South-East Asia. The results of this research directly benefit the Champa project (EFEO / AFD).

Showcasing the collections of Vat Ho Phra Kaeo in Vientiane:

This project focuses on showcasing Vat Ho Phra Kaeo and the significant collections of religious art held by this temple, which has been converted into a museum. It comprises four main components: cataloguing and documenting the artefacts; reorganising the collections; restoring certain objects; and publishing a guidebook. The project also aims to highlight the richness and complexity (spanning three historical periods) of Buddhist practices in the Vientiane Plain over a period of 1,200 years.
