History

Following many years of occasional collaboration between the EFEO and the sinology community in Hong Kong, the EFEO Permanent Centre was established in 1994 within the Institute of Chinese Studies (ICS) at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK).

Presentation

The EFEO’s cooperation with the ICS extends, within CUHK, to the Centre for Taoist Culture Research (co-publishing the journal Daoism: Religion, History, Society, co-organising symposiums and conferences), and to the departments of religious studies and history. It has also developed collaborations with other universities, including the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), the Department of Chinese History and Culture at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), and the Department of History at the University of Hong Kong (HKU).

Until recently, the projects hosted focused on the history and anthropology of Chinese religions. Since 2022, the emphasis has been on Asian maritime history and cartography.

The Hong Kong Centre welcomes French and international researchers and students and facilitates the stay in France of CUHK doctoral students and teachers under a bilateral cooperation agreement. Candidates may be eligible for an EFEO fieldwork grant or a Flora Blanchon scholarship, which the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres announced in 2014 with the aim of promoting scientific exchanges between East Asia (particularly China and neighbouring countries) and France.
