The EFEO centre in Taipei is located at Academia Sinica. Hosted by the Institute of Modern History from 1992 to 1996, it has been housed by the Institute of History and Philology since 1996 following the signing of a cooperation agreement.

History

The EFEO centre in Taipei coordinates individual and collective projects undertaken by EFEO researchers and maintains regular contact with visiting researchers and student researchers. It welcomes and assists EFEO fellows and other students staying in Taiwan.

Since its creation, the Taipei Centre has devoted its research to the cultural and local history and protohistory of China and Taiwan, as well as to the sociology and anthropology of Chinese religions. Philological work has also been carried out, such as the inventory of the Tibetan collection of the Fu Ssu-nien Library and the cataloguing of a collection of Burmese manuscripts. More recently, the main programmes have focused on the political history of China’s borders, Sino-Tibetan relations, the history of urban administration, the study of Tibetan Buddhism in Taiwan, maritime history, the history of Taiwanese archaeology and Austronesian prehistory.

Recent research projects and symposiums organised by the centre include ‘Practice of Tibetan Buddhism in Taiwan’ (Fabienne Jagou, CCKF, 2012-2015), ‘Maritime Knowledge for China Seas’ (Paola Calanca & Chen Kuo-tung, ANR/MOST, 2014-2019), ‘Taiwan Maritime Landscapes from Neolithic to Early Modern Times’ (Paola Calanca, Liu Yi-chang & Frank Muyard, PHC Orchid, 2015, Paris 2015 conference, book published by EFEO, 2022), ‘Maritime Exchange and Localisation across the South China Sea, 500 BC-AD 500’ (Tainan 2018 conference, book published by EFEO, 2025), ‘Navigation practices in Asian seas (16th-19th centuries)’ (Paola Calanca & Chen Kuo-tung, CCKF, 2021-2025), ‘From Late Imperial to Republican China: Continuities and Ruptures’ (EFEO-EHESS-CNRS-Campus France & IHM-IHP summer school, Oléron 2021), ‘Buried in Jars: Earthenware Containers and Mortuary Practices in Taiwan and the Philippines’ (Tainan, 2021), ‘Indigenous Archaeology and Cultural Heritage in Asia-Pacific’ (Tainan, 2023), ‘New Directions in Historical and Cultural Studies in Asia – Celebrating the 30th anniversary of cooperation between EFEO and Academia Sinica’ (Taipei, 2023), ‘Asia-Pacific Indigenous Archaeology: Emergence and Perspectives’ (Paris, 2024), ‘Pan-Pacific Indigenous Archaeology’ (Tainan, 2024), ‘From Funan to Lingnan: Material Flow and Regional Connectivity in Southeast Asia’ (Taipei, 2026).
