As part of their partnership, CNRS Humanities & Social Sciences and the French School of Asian Studies (École française d’Extrême-Orient – EFEO) have established an international mobility scheme designed to support research missions in the humanities and social sciences.
The programme aims to foster the development of international scientific collaborations and to support research projects requiring an extended stay abroad. Missions may include, in particular, fieldwork, scientific collaborations, consultation of sources and archives, project development, or the joint writing of articles or monographs. Stays range from three to nine months and must be completed within the same calendar year.
During the mobility period, researchers are fully integrated into the scientific life of the EFEO. Projects are encouraged to align with the institution’s research priorities and to draw on the EFEO’s research centres in Asia. Travel outside the defined research area should remain limited and is subject to prior authorisation.
The stay benefits from co-funding by the CNRS and the EFEO, in the form of a monthly lump sum intended to cover mission-related expenses. Funds are transferred to the beneficiary’s home research unit and must be fully used within the year concerned, with no possibility of carry-over. Administrative and financial management is the responsibility of the applicant’s research unit.
This scheme is open exclusively to tenured staff (researchers, lecturer-researchers and research engineers) affiliated with humanities and social sciences research units under the supervision or joint supervision of the CNRS. Projects are jointly assessed by the CNRS and the EFEO on the basis of their scientific quality and their contribution to international cooperation.
At the end of the mission, beneficiaries undertake to submit an activity report detailing the work carried out and the results obtained. The implementation of stays is also subject to health conditions and any restrictions in force in the host countries.
