Vietnam

In September 2012, the EFEO relocated to Ho Chi Minh City, where it was founded in the late 19th century, thereby reviving scientific cooperation with research institutions in southern Vietnam.

History

The EFEO center in Ho Chi Minh City opened in September 2012. Its premises are located in the heart of the city, at 113 Hai Bà Trung Street, in a villa belonging to the French Consulate General that previously housed the annex of the French high school.

Presentation

From a logistical point of view, the center occupies the entire ground floor of the villa, which is divided into four offices, two of which are available to researchers and students. On the first floor, the center has a conference room (maximum capacity 40 people) where two types of events are held periodically:

Although the center does not have a library open to the public, it is located near the Social Sciences Library (Institute of Social Sciences of the South), the General Sciences Library, and National Archives Center No. 2.

Partners and partnerships

Vietnamese partners are diverse and vary depending on the research projects developed: the Southern Institute of Social Sciences (SISS), which is part of the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences (VASS), the institutional partner of the EFEO in Vietnam; the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in Ho Chi Minh City (UNSSH), the Association of Vietnamese Historians, the State Archives Department of Vietnam (DEAV), the Institute for Cultural Exchange with France (IDECAF), the Center for Heritage Preservation of the Citadel of Thăng-Long / Hanoi, and various provincial People’s Committees. Partnerships with French universities and research centers are also evolving: the École Pratique des Hautes Études (EPHE), the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS), the Institute for Asian Research (IRASIA), the Institute for Research and Development (IRD), the French Development Agency (AFD), the Overseas National Archives, etc.

Research areas

  • Social and political management of water: historical and contemporary issues
  • Strategies for adapting to climate change in rural areas
  • The evolution of national land use planning in the 19th century

Activities

  1.  Series of lectures and debates

Since the end of 2018, a series of bilingual lectures and debates has been organized at the EFEO center in Ho Chi Minh City. The audience of around forty guests (maximum capacity) consists of researchers, teachers, students, and intellectuals from both Vietnam and abroad. Since 2018, thirty-three lectures have been given, and videos of nineteen of them are available on the EFEO’s YouTube channel.

     2. Research seminar (Saigon Social Science Hub: SSSH)

This is a series of meetings and seminars bringing together around fifteen Vietnamese and foreign doctoral students and young researchers (around thirty remotely) to discuss their respective research topics. Between 2020 and 2025, sixty-eight sessions were organized.
