Research in progress
Luca Gabbiani is interested in the social history of institutions in the Qing Empire (1644-1911), particularly in an urban context. His work has focused on urban governance, the history of Chinese imperial law, and the development of administrative knowledge in the Chinese bureaucratic monarchy. He is currently interested in the question of urban construction throughout the empire in order to shed light on the nature of the socio-economic relationships established by real estate in the cities of the Qing Empire on a legal and social level. He also coordinates a research program funded by the https://anr.fr/Projet-ANR-24-CE27-4500 and the National Science and Technology Council (Taiwan) focused on the study of crime within the empire in the 18th and 19th centuries. This program draws in particular on judicial documentation from four major local archive collections dating back to the Qing dynasty and preserved to this day.
