Research in progress

François Lachaud’s research focuses on the history of Buddhism and its place in Japanese culture from the late Middle Ages to the modern and contemporary periods.

In the field of art history, he has focused on the rediscovery of the work of Kobayashi Kiyochika (1847-1915) and his role in the visual modernization of the country. Another focus of his work concerns the history of collections and antiquarianism, considered through the lens of Ōbaku Zen culture (1650-1800), its links with the visual arts, the tea arts, material culture, and the revival of literature fueled by the reception of the great Chinese novels in baihua.

He has also studied the cultural and diplomatic relations between Japan, China, Eurasia, and the West from the 16th to the 19th century, research that has resulted in three collective volumes (2010, 2017, 2021) and a book devoted to Western lexicography of East Asian languages (2023).

His current projects focus on the transformations in representations of the Buddhist afterlife from the 18th to the 20th century. They also include the study of vernacular religion and the genesis of modern folklore, through the analysis of the links between landscapes and religious identities in Tōhoku, particularly the domestic cult of Oshirasama, as well as the modern formation of yōkai culture. He also analyzes illustrated ethnographies of the Ainu people during the Edo period (1650-1850), placing them in the context of the history of scholarly traditions on the northern margins, as part of a project devoted to « indigenous peoples in East Asia (1600-1900) , » which is a continuation of his connected history of contacts between empires, cultures, and societies.
