“The politics of images” in Angkorian Cambodia: this area of research focuses on examining the iconographic arrangements of the great Khmer royal temples and a new history of the cult of Devarâja (“God-King”) over the long term. This work focuses in particular on the modalities of what appears to be a “theological-political” turning point in medieval Cambodia in the 10th and 11th centuries. This work forms the basis of the ongoing program to study and restore the monumental statue of the dancing Shiva at Prasat Thom in Koh Ker, interpreted as the founding image of the cult of Devarâja.

“Espacer les eaux” (Spacing the waters): backed by an archaeological mission entitled “Geoarchaeological study of the hydraulic network of the lower Stung Puok plain” (GASP), this project reexamines the relationship established in historiography between urban hydraulics and agricultural hydraulics (from the Mekong Delta to the Angkor plain) . The work in progress demonstrates that an ancient network of canals and roads, mistakenly interpreted as an irrigation network for the western baray, actually traces the layout of a vast 7th-century capital. The aim is to explore all the implications of this discovery, both in terms of rethinking the history of the capitals of ancient Cambodia and taking a necessary critical look at the archaeological research carried out at Angkor over the past 30 years.

“Epigraphic practice and history of elites”: this area of research is based on work carried out as part of a seminar entitled “Language, history, and textual sources of ancient and modern Cambodia” (2014-2024). Recent work has focused on inscriptions documenting the “Buddhist side” of the Devarâja cult, leading to a reopening of the debate on the interpretation of the face towers from the reign of Jayavarman VII (late 12th-early 13th century).
