Research in progress

Dominic Goodall’s main research is part of a project to reconstruct the history of Shaivism. He participates in the CIK (« Corpus of Khmer Inscriptions ») project, which has resulted in numerous editions of Cambodian inscriptions, and is also interested in Indian literature in Sanskrit. Several of his publications are editions and translations (prepared in collaboration with several colleagues) of works of Sanskrit poetry (Raghuvaṃśa, Kuṭṭanīmata), tantras (Parākhyatantra, Niśvāsatattvasaṃhitā) and theological commentaries that are either unpublished (Kiraṇavṛtti) or untranslated (Paramokṣanirāsakārikāvṛtti).

This work is being carried out as part of two major European Research Council (ERC) projects involving several researchers from the EFEO Center in Pondicherry, namely DHARMA (ERC No. 809994, led by the CNRS, the EFEO, and Humboldt University of Berlin) and Sivadharma (ERC No. 803624, led by the University of Naples “L’Orientale”).

Dominic Goodall co-directs, with Marion Rastelli of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, the Viennese dictionary of Hindu tantric terminology, the Tāntrikābhidhānakośa.

He is also responsible for the Pondicherry team working on the project « Hindu Temple Legends in South India  » (https://www.hadw-bw.de/en/research/research-center/hindu-temple-legends-south-india/research-project), a collaborative project funded by the German Academies’ Alliance and led by the Heidelberg Akademie der Wissenschaften, under the direction of Ute Hüsken, and by the EFEO. Launched in October 2022, this is a 16-year project focusing on the history of the ancient city of Kanchipuram and concentrating in part on the praises of temples (mâhâtmya) in Sanskrit and Tamil. Several Tamil and Sanskrit scholars from the Pondicherry Center are collaborating on the project, and Dominic Goodall participates in their reading sessions three times a week.
