David Bazin

Since the launch of the CHAMPA project in January 2020, David Bazin has been heading the EFEO’s geospatial laboratory in Champasak (Laos), under the supervision of Damian Evans and, since 2023, Christophe Pottier. He leads a team of three Lao engineers dedicated to analysing LIDAR data in the provinces of Champasak and Savannakhet, in collaboration with the EFEO’s Archaeoscape.ai laboratory in Paris, and oversees the topographical, ground-penetrating radar and photogrammetric surveys carried out in support of archaeological excavations and architectural surveys. He is responsible for the logistics of all EFEO missions in Champasak and Savannakhet as part of the CHAMPA project project (archaeological excavations, studies and expert assessments of the Savannakhet Museum and Treasury, Vat Taleo Keo, Vat Meuang Kang and the Vat Phou Museum), as well as the accounting and administrative management of the EFEO Champasak office, in his capacity as administrator. Since 2025, he has been working with the EFEO’s LIDAR team to support the Natural Forestore project (led by Maxime Réjou-Méchain, IRD, and Anuttara Nathalang, NCGEB Thailand) in preparing forest study areas, and he is an associate researcher on the ANR DEEPFOREST project (led by Christophe Pottier, 2025–2028, AAPG25 ANR-25-CE56-6071). Since 2024, he has been involved in supervising LIDAR training courses organised as part of Archaeoscape.ai’s activities in Trawas (Indonesia) and Sukhothai (Thailand).
