Brice Vincent specialized in Khmer studies and Khmer archaeology during his university studies, before devoting himself to doctoral and post-doctoral research on the study of copper metallurgy and its alloys in ancient and modern Cambodia.

Since 2016, he has been leading a multidisciplinary research program called LANGAU, or “copper” in Old Khmer, which is dedicated to the study of copper metallurgy and its alloys during the Angkorian period (9th-15th centuries). He also directs the associated archaeological mission (research grant for archaeological missions from the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs).

The LANGAU program aims to reconstruct both the history and technology of this largely unknown aspect of Angkorian craftsmanship, not only by recontextualizing it within a centralized state system, but also by breaking it down into the various stages of production, from the mines to the foundries and places of consumption. It is organized around two main components:

  • The first, entitled LANGAU – Melting for the King, has been conducting an archaeological and archaeometallurgical study of a royal foundry site in Angkor, in the province of Siem Reap (EFEO / APSARA National Authority), since 2016.
  • The second, entitled LANGAU – The Sources of Copper in Angkor, has been conducting a study since 2019 on the sources of supply and distribution networks for copper during the Angkorian period, both within the former Khmer Empire and in neighboring territories (EFEO / Cambodian Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts). The research focuses in particular on the vast Chhaep mining and metallurgical complex (500 km2) in Preah Vihear province, which is the first primary copper production site identified in Cambodia and also one of the sources of Angkorian copper.

He has participated, or is still participating, in several other international research projects in the fields of archaeology, archaeometallurgy, conservation-restoration, and museography:

  • He coordinates the study of the “Nong Hua Thong Treasure,” now preserved in the city of Savannakhet and the province of the same name in Laos, as part of the CHAMPA project (Cultural HeritAge Management, Protection and Attractiveness, funded by the French Development Agency, 2020-2028).
  • Together with David Bourgarit (C2RMF) and Pierre Baptiste (Guimet Museum), he is coordinating the technological study and conservation-restoration project for the reclining Vishnu of the Western Mebon (Vishnu Project, National Museum of Cambodia / C2RMF / MNAAG / EFEO, 2018-2027; funded by the Aliph Foundation, 2019-2025).
  • Alongside Pierre Baptiste (Guimet Museum), David Bourgarit (C2RMF) and Thierry Zéphir (Guimet Museum), he curated the exhibition Royal Bronzes of Angkor, an Art of the Divine (Guimet Museum, April 30 – September 8, 2025).
