Research in progress

Benoît Jacquet’s research on the history of modern architecture in Japan focuses on three areas:

  • Intellectual history of modern Japanese architecture: the first area of research focuses on analyzing the discourse and thinking developed by Japanese architects during the 20th century. This research is based on an in-depth understanding of contemporary architectural doctrines, shaped by intellectual, scientific, and technological exchanges between the West and Japan. Benoît Jacquet has studied the discourse of the leading figures of modern Japanese architecture, mainly that of the architect-professors who left their mark on their generation through their intellectual, artistic, and architectural output.
  • Architecture, environment, and landscape of Japanese cities: the second area of study is parallel to the first in historical terms—modern and contemporary Japan—but covers a broader geographical scope, moving from the architectural scale to that of cities and regions. The studies conducted by Benoît Jacquet in Japan since 1999 fall within the field of urban and landscape studies, commonly taught in ENSA architecture schools and their affiliated research laboratories. As a teacher at the ENSA in Paris-La Villette, Benoît Jacquet is associated with the “Architecture, Environment, Landscape” laboratory in a research project on the influence of the seasons on the environment, architecture, landscape, and Japanese cities.
  • History of construction practices and techniques in Japan: the third area focuses on the material culture of architecture and the analysis of architectural and construction practices. Currently, with three practicing architects (in France and Cambodia), Benoît Jacquet is conducting a detailed study of townhouses (machiya) built in pre-modern Japan (from the 17th century onwards) in Kyoto.
