Andrew Hardy is a historian specializing in the history of migration, border areas, and interethnic relations in Vietnam, with a geographical focus on the central region of the country.
His research focuses on the history of Vietnamese imperial expansion and Vietnam’s relations with Champa and the inhabitants of the highlands. The aim is to shed light on the social, economic, and political dynamics that have shaped central Vietnam since the fall of the Champa kingdom (15th century). Comprising three distinct ecologies—the coastal plain and its village civilizations, the highlands and their mountain populations, and the maritime space with its merchant networks and global connections—this region is the site of several economic, political, and military border systems. Andrew Hardy traces the evolution of the borders that have been established and dismantled over time, and follows the mobility and interactions of its populations to analyze the relationships between the respective territories. His research continues in several areas:
- the “nguon” markets, hubs of trade between the plains and mountains since the 17th century, located on all the major rivers in the region;
- the Quang Ngai–Binh Dinh wall (Quang Ngai and Gia Lai provinces), a military infrastructure built in 1819 to manage the movements of the Kinh and Hrê ethnic groups;
- the An Khe plateau (Gia Lai province), site of the Tay Son rebellion (1771) and the Can Vuong anti-colonial resistance in the 19th century (1885).
The project is multidisciplinary, drawing on methodological contributions from history, archaeology, and ethnography to exploit sources (archives and field data). It relies on partnerships in Hanoi and cooperation in the provinces (the main ones being Quang Ngai, Gia Lai, and the city of Da Nang).
