A century after its "invention" by George Cœdès (BEFEO 1918), where are
we today in our knowledge of this powerful Malay State with it maritime
strength? Why are the details of this kingdom that was so prestigious among its
contemporaries - from Baghdad to the Middle Kingdom, among sea traders as well
as in the Buddhist diaspora -today so difficult for archaeologists to
distinguish? Its origins, the location of its political center in Sumatra, its
territorial extent, the nature of its political power have all, since 1918,
been the object of heated discussions. Research over the past three decades has
provided the answers to some of these questions, but there are still many
