Véronique Degroot

Véronique Degroot's research focuses on the archaeology of the Hindo-Buddhist period in Indonesia. She has been involved in many archaeological projects in Sumatra and Java - among others at Batujaya, Padang Lawas, Batang and Kendal.

Since 2012, she has been co-director, with Agustijanto Indrajaya (Pusat Penelitian Arkeologi Nasional), of the PANTURAH project (Pantai Utara Jawa Tengah pada Zaman Hindu-Buddha). This Franco-Indonesian project, which combines survey and diagnostic excavations, aims at assessing the archaeological potential of the north coast of Central Java.

In 2020, Véronique Degroot, Agustijanto Indrajaya and Sondang Siregar (Balai Arkeologi Palembang) launched the SriBumi project. Combining excavations, surveys, stylistic studies and paleo-environmental research, the mission wants to shed a new light on the place occupied by the Hindu site of Bumiayu within the commercial and political network of the great Buddhist kingdom of Śrīvijaya.
