The Unit programmes are divided into three projects:

  • Proto-urban Sites and Ancient Cities: surveys, archaeological excavations and monumental restoration
  • Urban history, centralization and space management
  • State and dynamics of the peripheries

History of Religions Prize of the Foundation ''Les amis de Pierre-Antoine Bernheim''

On June 19, the "Les amis de Pierre-Antoine Bernheim" [Friends of Pierre-Antoine Bernheim] Foundation of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres awarded the History of Religions Prize to Martin Nogueira Ramos, EFEO lecturer and head of the EFEO Center in Kyoto, for his work La foi des ancêtres: Chrétiens cachés et catholiques dans la société villageoise japonaise XVIIe-XIXe siècles [The faith of the ancestors: Hidden Christians and Catholics in Japanese village society in the 17thto 19th centuries] (Paris, CNRS Éditions, 2019). The work traces the history of Japanese Christian communities from the time of proscription (1614) to the return of missionaries to the archipelago in the second half of the 19th century.

Reopening of the EFEO Library by APPOINTMENT

From Monday 6 July 2020, the library reading room will open a limited number of places, by appointment. These places are reserved for advanced students (M1, M2 and PhD) and researchers in Asian studies wishing to consult the collections of the Maison de l'Asie. For practical reasons, we ask readers to reserve their documents at least 24 hours in advance. Reserved works will be pre-deposited on a table when the reader arrives. Reservations are made as usual on the library catalogue, via the reader account: catalogue.bulac.fr.

When the maximum number of open places is reached, the reservation date disappears from the drop-down menu.Reading places will be open for reservation every Thursday for the following week.

The Maison de l'Asie and the library are closed to the public from March 16 until further notice.
