The creation of the Seoul Branch Office in 1994 marked the beginning of the EFEO presence in Korea. In 2001 the School recruited its first Korean studies specialist and signed a new agreement with its host institution, the Asian Research Institute (ARI) of Korea University. This led to new research programs in art history and Korean national heritage conservation.

The cooperative programme between the above-mentioned institutions, local and European specialists, extends to include the EFEO's work from Séoul to P'yôngyang.

Current research program:

  • Archaeological study of funerary practices of North-Eastern Asia
  • History, archaeology, and art history of the Kaesông site in the People's Democratic Republic of Korea
  • Franco-Korean cultural relations in the late 19th and early 20th century

In current research projects, the EFEO Seoul Centre closely cooperates with the Korean National Museums, The Seoul Museum of History and the Korea Universityin the Republic of Korea, and the National Bureau for Cultural Properties Conservation in the People's Democratic Republic of Korea.

The Centre encourages scholarly exchanges with researchers and students from European institutions and maintains close cooperation with the Centre for Research on Korea at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS - School of Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences) and the Paris 7 University in Paris, and the Leiden University.
