Conference: Honey collecting and beekeeping of the Asian giant honeybee in Indonesia
08 MARS 17
As part of the conference series "Man, territories and societies", the EFEO and the IFI are pleased to invite you to attend the lecture of Nicolas Césard (National Museum of Natural History, Paris) about beekeeping in Indonesia.
When : Wednesday March 15 at 17.30    Where : IFI auditorium, Jl Thamrin No 20. In Borneo, as elsewhere in South and South-East Asia, honey hunters take significant risks in going to collect wild honey from the Asian giant honeybees, a species known to nest in the open-air underneath the branches of large trees or in high cliffs. Despite the risks and sometimes accidents, this honey collection continues to be practised intensively in season because honey and bee brood provide essential energy foods as well as additional income. In parallel to honey hunting, a form of management of bee swarms, close to beekeeping, has developed in very localised areas. The technique consists of setting up at ground level or within human reach a wooden stand under which the bees will found their colony. Based on a collaborative work with a photographer in the region of Danau Senatarum (West Kalimantan) and on an exhibition under way in Paris, the presentation will discuss the local ecological knowledge and know-how of the giant honeybee in Indonesia.
