Georges Maspero’s Le Royaume de Champa: publication of a Vietnamese edition
21 FÉVRIER 20
Maspero’s book was first published in 1910-1913. His narrative of Champa, reduced to its simplest expression, is the rise-and-fall story of a single kingdom inhabited by a single people, the Cham. This people’s history is portrayed as an epic of conflict between peuples, with a central focus on the violent relations that successive dynasties pursued with neighbouring states. An initial period of expansion is followed by a gradual and inevitable decline culminating in the kingdom’s extinction in 1471.
Each element in this narrative has been called into question by the findings of recent research. Why then should we still read Le royaume de Champa? First, it is a valuable resource, for its data and its ideas. Second, it has played an influential role in stimulating historical debate. For these reasons the Hanoi centre of the EFEO and the Vietnam National Museum of History in Hanoi have, for the first time, published a Vietnamese translation made at the museum many decades ago.
