‘Researching the Region in Vietnamese History: the Case of Central Vietnam’ is the subject of Andrew Hardy’s keynote lecture to the conference on ‘Area Studies - Vietnamese Studies: Research and Training orientation’, held to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Institute of Vietnamese Studies and Development Science, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Hanoi. The themes of environment, landscape and region structure this presentation of the results of research in the central region, which uses examples from Vietnam and Champa to attempt a definition of the notion of region and discuss the relationship between geography and history.
