The Rice, the Rice Goddess and the Sickle: Bru Country in the 1980s
17 OCTOBER 18
Hungarian anthropologist Gabor Vargyas, author of « A la recherche des Brou perdus », did extensive fieldwork among the Bru Vân Kiều (Quảng Trị province). In the 1980s, he lived for 18 months in a Bru-Van Kieu village, learned their language and shared their lifestyle, in an experience of anthropological research that has given him a unique understanding of the culture of this ethnic group. In the light of his recent return visit to Bru country, in this lecture he looks back on their traditional agricultural practices and related religious beliefs.
