The Sơn Phòng network of mountain fortifications developed in the 1870s to counter the threat of invasion over Vietnam’s western boundary was the subject of field research conducted by Andrew Hardy, Nguyễn Tiến Đông and Đào Thế Đức. Survey of a large fort in Hương Khê district (Hà Tĩnh province); interviews at the village of the nationalist Phan Chu Trinh (Tây Lộc village, Quảng Nam province) and of the leader of the Cần Vương revolt (1885) in Bình Định province, Mai Xuân Thưởng (Phú Lạc village, Bình Định province).
