Title:
Curating Javanese Antiquities: A Cross-history of the Museum Volkenkunde and the Museum Nasional Indonesia
Host:
Prof. Tai Li-chuan

&
Prof. Frank MUYARD
Head, EFEO Taipei Center
Date:
Wednesday, December 10, 2025, 15:00 pm
Venue:
Conference Room 703, Research Building, Institute of History and Philology, Academia Sinica
Abstract:
The Museum Volkenkunde, in the Netherlands, and the Museum Nasional
Indonesia have a long shared history. Not least because they have the largest
collections of Javanese antiquities in the world and that these collections
were curated conjointly. This lecture proposes to look at how both institutions
came to be, how they have evolved and how they have worked with one another for
150 years from the perspective, not of a historian of institutions, but the
more pragmatic one of a former curator and expert in Javanese archaeology.
Organizers: Institute of History and Philology, Academia Sinica & EFEO Taipei Center.
※ The talk will be given in English. Registration is not required.
