Archaeogenetics and the Luzon Strait: What Can DNA Contribute to an Understanding of the History of Contact between the Philippines and Taiwan?

Résumé:
In an ideal world ancient DNA would permit a window on the past but the quantity and quality of human remains available for analysis provides a very partial view. There simply are not sufficient contemporary individuals with high levels of endogenous DNA to reconstruct a detailed population history. Moreover, for the recent past (i.e. the last 4,000 years) samples from present-day individuals, in conjunction with the right methods, are well suited to the task of evaluating population histories. Here, I present new research using sampling from the Philippines at unprecedented levels of detail, together with Batanes, and Taiwan Austronesian groups of Ami, Atayal and Tao. The results demonstrate that Luzon retains significant genetic structure that segregates Negritos, Cordillerans and groups in and around the Cagayan valley, the latter forming a cluster with eastern Taiwan and the Batanes. I will contrast the results with previous research that included indigenous Taiwanese data and discuss whether there is any signal for an Out of Taiwan dispersal as hypothesised by Peter Bellwood.
