Résumé:
Several inlay techniques succeeded one after another, or were combined together in the Late Zhou period, from about the first half of the Sixth century B.C. : copper and gold appeared first, then chips of stones, then silver, faïence, and pigmented paste filling. Different cases occur according to the nature of the inlays. However, in spite of their diversity, they share in common a specific taste for colorful contrasts and the necessity on the part of the craftsmen to invent technical solutions to meet new artistic requirements. In fact, many inlay techniques were created to respond to the needs of new designs and taste. In this lecture, the interaction between materials, shapes and motifs will be explored through several artworks discovered for the most part in the former territory of the Chu kingdom, or made by Chu craftsmen. Indeed, the period covering the Fourth and Third centuries B.C. appears to have been one of the most innovative in the arts of lacquer and bronze, due probably to a certain artistic freedom.
