on Tuesday, 21st August 2012 at 4.30 p.m. at the Library Hall of the EFEO, 19, Dumas Street, PondicherryTitle: Towards a critical edition of the ViracoliyamSummary: The presentation seeks to explain the efforts undertaken by the researcher to prepare a critical edition of the Viracoliyam, a Tamil grammatical text written by a Buddhist called Puttamittiranar of the 11th century A.D on Pancalakshana, a contrastive transfer model belonging to the Sanskrit school of Tamil grammatical tradition. After describing the print history and the textual tradition of the text, a tentative stemma codicum is proposed with sample passages. A close examination of the omissions, additions, alterations and rearrangements made in the first printed edition which became the standard recension later, will also be discussed.
