The Sacred Groves of Aiyaṉār, exhibition by Jean-Louis Cardin
01 FEBRUARY 19
In sacred groves at the edges of settlements, Aiyaṉār deploys his army
of cows, elephants, and horses of terracotta. They stand in wait, ready
for him to mount, so that he may chase away evil spirits that threaten
to disturb the serenity of sleeping villagers after dark. This
photographic exhibition is a reflection of the fragile and eerie beauty
of such shrines, ancient and modern, that are spread across the length
and breadth of the Tamil-speaking South. It is organized as part of the
Pondicherry Heritage Festival 2019 and will be open at 19, Dumas Street,
Pondicherry, throughout the month of February 2019.
