Festive bathing when the full moon is in the constellation of Maghā is alluded to already by the poet Ñānacampantar (Jñānasambandha, C7th-C8th?, Tēvāram 2.47.6). Every year the festival draws a large crowd to the beach of Vaittikkuppam, to the North of the city of Pondicherry.
