Lecture by Anaïs Wion on Ethiopian Manuscripts
20 JANUARY 11
The Christian kingdom of Ethiopia has an extremely rich written culture. Manuscripts in Ge'ez, the language of liturgy and ritual, and in Amharic, the vernacular language that slowly gained the status of a written language from the eighteenth century, are testimonies of the long presence of writing in the highlands of Ethiopia. This lecture will be an occasion for discovering this culture, enriched by various influences, between the fourteenth and twentieth centuries.
