The École française d’Extrême-Orient (EFEO) and the Scuola Italiana di Studi sull'Asia Orientale (ISEAS) launched in November a new series of lectures in partnership with the Institute for Research in Humanities (Kyoto University).
 
This series focuses on religious teaching and preaching in Early Modern Japan with the aim to promote dialogue among students and scholars doing research on Japanese religious history from different nationalities and institutional backgrounds.
 
For 2018-2019 six talks are on schedule, all in Japanese.
 
The fifth talk will be held on the 14th of June at the at the EFEO Kyoto Center  with Nei Kiyoshi (Director of the Hizen Shimabara Matsudaira bunko) as a speaker.

肥前温泉山（雲仙）信仰とキリシタン伝来
講師：根井浄（肥前島原松平文庫長・元龍谷大学教授）
 
長崎県島原半島の中央に雲仙・普賢岳がそびえる。島原は江戸時代の島原・天草の乱で殊に著名な場所であるが、かつて雲仙岳は、温泉山と表記して「うんせんさん」と称した信仰対象の山岳であった。いわゆる修験道の山岳霊場であった。
当山岳地帯には温泉四面神という特異な神が祀られ、奈良時代の行基を開祖と伝える満明寺が実質的に祭祀した。周知のように、16世紀中期には当該地にキリシタンが伝来する。当時の領主・有馬氏はキリシタンを受容し、政策の一環として領内の寺社仏閣を破壊することになる。今回の報告は、フロイス『日本史』の記事を中心に、戦国末期における修験道（在来宗教）とキリシタン（外来宗教）との激しい確執の実態に迫ってみたい。
また江戸期の温泉山（雲仙）は地獄信仰の場所でもあり、かつ多くの修行者が訪れた廻国納経の霊場でもあった。ともあれ、種々、温泉山信仰の諸相を紹介する。

根井浄 （ネイ・キヨシ）
肥前島原松平文庫長・元龍谷大学教授。日本宗教文化史、民俗学を専門とする。主な著書に『修験道とキリシタン』（東京堂出版、1988年）、『補陀落渡海史』（法藏館、2001年）、『熊野比丘尼を絵解きする』（法藏館、2007年）、『観音浄土に船出した人びと』（吉川弘文館、2008年）などがある。
