The EFEO Center in Pune, Maharashtra, the great university city of western India known under the British as Poona, was set up in 1964. The establishment of the EFEO on the campus of Deccan College, a distinguished teaching and research institution well-known for its rich library resources, was formalized under an agreement between the two institutions signed in 1997.

At the outset the aim of the Center was primarily to further studies on modern Indo-Aryan languages and literature. Since the early 1990's the Center has also hosted research in several areas.

Current research program:

  • Sanskrit treatises on logic and exegesis
  • Contemporary religions
  • The Maratha language
  • Indian treatises on mathematics

Work has also been carried out on the application of new technologies to philology, especially the adaptation of computer Internet languages (html, xml, xsl, etc.) to Sanskrit and other Indian languages.

The Center also houses a collection of Marathi literature and basic reference works for Indian studies. Visiting scholars including fellowship holders and doctoral candidates also have access to the library resources of Deccan College.
