The French School of Asian Studies conducts research on the classical civilizations of Asia through the humanities and the social sciences, spanning from India to China, Japan and includes all of Southeast Asia, thus encompassing most of the societies that have fallen under Indian or Chinese influence in the course of history. The EFEO's centres and branch offices in Asia are base for a nexus of leading (local and international) scholars in Asian Studies. Its multidisciplinary and comparative research brings together specialists in disciplines such as anthropology, archaeology, history, philology and the study of religions. Since members of its academic staff are regularly in Asia for their fieldwork, the EFEO's activity obviously covers contemporary world issues.

Symposium ''Ecologies of Writing: Making a Mark, Marking a Place''

On 20 and 21th September, UCL Institute of Advanced Studies & PSL Scripta programme as part of the Materialities of Writing Collaborative Research Project organize the symposium Ecologies of Writing: Making a Mark, Marking a Place.
This Symposium address the overall theme of ‘Ecologies of Writing’ from multiple disciplinary perspectives: how individuals and cultures physically inscribe and re-inscribe environments, platforms and places through ‘writing’, broadly conceived, and, in turn, how an inscribed place/ground ‘makes a mark’ on the way such surfaces and sites are used by human/non-human inhabitants. The colloquium will be presented through three panels, Emplacement, Ecologies, and Embodiment.

DHARMA : 1st Workshop

The ERC DHARMA held its first Workshop in Berlin, from the 16th to the 21st of September.Hosted by the Humboldt University, more than 50 experts in Indology and data management  attended the kick-off. DHARMA will study the history of “Hinduism” in comparative perspective, focusing on the period from the 6th to the 13th century.
The three Principal Investigators of the project: Emmanuel FRANCIS (CNRS); Annette SCHMIEDCHEN (Humboldt University) and Arlo GRIFFITHS (Ecole Française d’Extrême Orient).
Travel subventions for the conference ''New Perspectives in Chinese History''

As part of the organisation of the conference "New Perspectives in Chinese History" to be held from 16 to 18 October 2019 in Paris, five travel subventions for students (from Master 2 to PhD candidates, eventually to post-doctoral scholars) engaged in research on the history of modern China (Ming, Qing, Minguo periods) and enrolled in an European institution will be offered to attend this conference.

IATS2019 Tibetology Congress

Fabienne Jagou, alongside Matthew Kapstein (EPHE), Françoise Pommaret (CRCAO), Françoise Robin (INALCO) and Nicolas Sihlé (CEH), are organising the IATS2019-Paris Tibetology Congress as part of the International Association of Tibetan Studies (IATS). This congress, in which the EFEO is a partner, brings together more than 650 researchers from all over the world and will take place from July 8 to 13, 2019, in Paris, at INALCO.
