Friday, September 23 - Paris

On the occasion of its 10th anniversary, the Société Française d'Etudes du Monde Tibétain (SFEMT) is organising a conference on 20th century Tibetology: "Tibetan studies in France (20th century): testimonies and memories" on September 23 at 4 pm, at the Maison de l'Asie.

This meeting will bring together teachers and researchers who have been involved in the history of Tibetan studies in France over the last few decades, who will talk about their beginnings in the discipline, evoke the constitution of Tibetan studies as a scientific cultural area and offer their perspectives on the future. They will be present: Anne-Marie Blondeau, Katia Buffetrille, Pascale Dollfus, Amy Heller, Samten Karmay, Matthew Kapstein, Fernand Meyer, Françoise Pommaret, Charles Ramble, Heather Stoddard and Samuel Thévoz.

On the occasion of this meeting, a photographic exhibition Premiers tibétologues en France will be presented on the 1st floor of the Maison de l'Asie from September 15 to 30.

This exhibition, presented for the first time in 2019 at the International Association for Tibetan Studies (IATS) conference, brings together 13 portraits of Tibetologists who founded and marked French Tibetology, from the 17th to the 21st century (trilingual captions in English, French and Tibetan).

Centres

Bangkok

From September 7 to December 31 the EFEO Center in Bangkok and the Sirindhorn Anthropology Center (SAC) will host the exhibition สักลาย: ศิลปะแห่งศรัทธาบนเรือนร่าง Saklai: silapa haeng sattha bon rueang rang (lit. "Tattoos: sacred art [inscribed] on the body"), devoted to the ritual tattoos of Thailand and Cambodia. This exhibition is a continuation of and takes up part of the Trance/Figuration exhibition previously organized by the EFEO in liaison with the Alliance française (Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Bangkok).

This exhibition presents a series of photographs illustrating Buddhist yantra tattooing rituals from Thailand and Cambodia (collections of Olivier de Bernon and François Lagirarde). The film Le Corps du texte (Olivier de Bernon, Olivier Delpoux, 1998) will also be shown. A second series of images, gathered by Phongsathorn Buakhampan (research assistant at the EFEO centre in Chiang Mai), is devoted to the tradition of "black bellies" and "white bellies," which consists, for the Thai/Tai populations of the northern regions, in having the lower part of the body tattooed.

The exhibition will be inaugurated during an event day (7/09) at the SAC, during which Olivier de Bernon, Gregory Kourilsky, Phongsathorn Buakhampan, as well as tattoo masters from the North of Thailand who will perform a demonstration of their art, will speak.

Phnom Penh

Sculpture Conservation Workshop of the National Museum of Cambodia / EFEO :

On July 29, after a beautiful ceremony at the National Museum of Cambodia, Chea Socheat (from the sculpture conservation workshop, above in the photo) supervised the removal of bas-reliefs from the Bantheay Chmar temple (Bantheay Meanchey Province).

This is a section of wall that belonged to the gallery of the third enclosure of the temple, and had been cut out and dismantled by looters. This gallery originally contained eight exceptional Lokesvara in bas-relief. After being seized in Thailand in the late 1990s, these more than 90 block sections, representing two of these Lokesvara, were returned to Cambodia in April 2020, and temporarily reassembled at the National Museum of Cambodia.

The restoration work currently being carried out at Bantheay Chhmar by the Cambodian Ministry of Culture will allow the next re-installation of these reliefs. Two figures of Lokesvara are still missing.

Pondicherry

T. Rajarethinam and R. Sathyanarayanan are in Berlin at the Freie Universität for the Deutsche Orientalistentag (from 12th to 17th September 2022), where they will present papers respectively entitled "Towards a Critical Edition of the Tamil Civatarumōttaram (sixteenth century CE), with special reference to the tenth chapter Civañāṉayōkaviyal" and “Journey to hell as prescribed in the Śivadharmottara, compared with Angkor Vat panel representations”.

Five scholars of the Pondicherry Centre (Dominic Goodall, K. Nachimuthu, T. Rajarethinam, S. Saravanan, R. Sathyanarayanan) are present at a 'Late-Summer Tamil School' to be held at Scuola di Procida - Centro di Alta Formazione of the Universita degli Studi di Napoli "L'Orientale", Naples (Italy) from September 23 to 30. This workshop is being organised as a part of the ERC-Starting Grant Project "Translocal Identities, The Sivadharma and the Making of Regional Religious Traditions in Premodern South Asia".

R. Sathyanarayanan is in Krakow from September 2-10 for reading sessions devoted to South Indian Māhātmyas, as well as for an inauguration and short working meeting on September 8-9 for the Beethoven Grant Project on Māhātmyas, organised by the universities of Heidelberg and Krakow, in which he is collaborating.

S.L.P. Anjaneya Sarma will be going to Shringeri for the Mahāgaṇapati-Vākyārtha-Sadas from September 4 to 11 and will be speaking about the Pāṇininian rule 1.4.52 (gatibuddhipratyavasānārthaśabdakarmākarmakāṇāṃ aṇikartā sa ṇau) about objects of causative verbs.

Seoul

From August 26 to September 24, Min-Kyung Yoon, Ph.D., of Leiden University and member of the Archaeological Mission to Kaesong, DPRK, is a visiting scholar at the EFEO to participate in the project to study the fortress and royal burial grounds of Kaesong, DPR Korea, and to complete the manuscript of her dissertation for publication ("Visual Representations of National History in North Korean Paintings, Cornell University Press").

From September 14 to October 5, as part of the Archaeological Mission to Kaesong, DPRK, Nicolas Nauleau, archaeologist, is visiting South Korea to participate in the mission's post-excavation operations. Accompanied by Élisabeth Chabanol, director of the mission, he is visiting the sites of the royal tombs and enclosures from the Koryŏ period (Hangp'aduri, Cheju-do; Kanghwa-do) currently being excavated by South Korean teams.

Researchers

Alain Arrault

Alain Arrault will give a presentation of Mémoires de Chine - La collection Louis Finot at the Phénix bookshop on September 24 at 6 pm. He will present archival photographs from the Louis Finot collection taken in the early 20th century during expeditions to the Chinese province of Yunnan, which borders Vietnam.

On September 5, at the invitation of the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts of Cambodia, Éric Bourdonneau will participate in the panel "Case Study from Cambodia: Lessons Learned from the Process of Retrieving Cultural Heritage" on the occasion of the international conference The Prevention of the Illicit Trafficking of Cultural Properties- An ASEAN Perspective which runs until September 8 in Siem Reap.

From September 16 to 29, Éric Bourdonneau will go to Cambodia to participate in the CIC-Preah Vihear and monitor the study and restoration programme of the Dancing Shiva of Koh Ker.

Élisabeth Chabanol

On September 15, at the Residence of France in Seoul, Élisabeth Chabanol, director of the Archaeological Mission in Kaesong, DPR Korea, presented the study project of the fortress and the royal tombs of the mission to the South Korean archaeologists and to the staff of the French embassies in South Korea.

Olivier de Bernon

Olivier de Bernon will be in Bangkok from september 4 to 9 and from october 5 to 9. On september 7 he will be giving a conference entitled "Traditional Khmer Tattoos, meanings and rituals" at the Sirindhorn anthropology centre. On september 8, he will take part in the presentation of Decoding Southeast Asian Art in tribute to Pr Piriya Krairiksh for which he has contributed "Khmer Legends of the Origin of Gaṇeśa".

From september 9 to october 5, he will be in Phnom Penh. Participating on october 3 to the opening of the "Voyage du roi Sisowath en France en 1906" exhibit, for which he acts as co-commisioner at the Cambodia museum of Economy and Money. He will give a presentation on september 20.

Luca Gabbiani

From september 9 to 11, Luca Gabbiani will take part in a international symposium "How is China Governed? From Ming Statecraft to Xi’s New Era" at the Institute of Asian Research of the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, organised as a tribute to professor Timothy Brook. He will be delivering a presentation entitled "The meaning of law. The Qing Code and the practice of statecraft in eighteenth and nineteenth century China".

Nicolas Fiévé

Nicolas Fiévé, Director of the EFEO and Professor at the EPHE (CRCAO), is organizing, with Sabine Frommel, Professor at the EPHE (HISTARA), the third series of lectures on The art of gardens in the civilizations of Europe and eastern Asia on the topic "Le jardin, art et technologie" [The garden, art and technology], on Thursday, September 29, at the Collège de France (Room 5, 11 Place Marcellin Berthelot, 75005 Paris).

Valérie Gillet

Valérie Gillet will participate in the DOT (Deutscher Orientalistentag) conference, which celebrates its 100th anniversary this year. It will take place at the Deutsche Morgenländische Gesellschaft (DMG) and the Freie Universität Berlin, in Berlin from September 12 to 17. On September 16, she will present a paper entitled : "Insights into the Tamil-speaking South of the 5th century C.E.: the inscriptions of Pūlāṅkuṟicci."

Frédéric Girard

Frédéric Girard will take part in the colloquium Traduction et diffusion des connaissances. Problèmes de traduction au Japon [Translation and knowledge dissemination: problems of translation in Japan], organized by the Société française de traductologie (Soft) and the Toshiba Foundation, to be held on September 9 at the EFEO (Grand Salon, 1st floor).

Gregory Kourilsky

From 22 to 26 September, Gregory Kourilsky will be on mission in Nakhon Si Thammarat (southern Thailand) to document the annual Jiṅ prēt ceremony. The rituals organised during this Buddhist ceremony are intended to help deceased relatives and ancestors, freed for a few days from the world of "hungry spirits" (phi pret, Sk. preta), an opportunity for them to visit their descendants. Comparable to other ceremonies celebrated in South-East Asia during the same period, the South Siamese tradition presents characteristic features, some of which are found in a similar form in the rites practised in the Mahayanist Buddhist communities of East Asia.

François Lachaud

François Lachaud is participating in the workshop Early Modern Kyūshū: A Regional Crossroads of Knowledge, Trade, and Production organised on 9 and 10 September 2022, as part of the CRCAO Kyushu Programme. On September 9, he will present a paper entitled "The Chinese Connection: Lives and Afterlives of Yinyuan Longqi (1592-1673) in Nagasaki".

The workshop is entirely online, registration required.

Michel Lorrillard

On September 8 and 9, in Bangkok, Michel Lorrillard will participate in the launching ceremony of the book Decoding Southeast Asian Art - Studies in Honor of Piriya Krairiksh (River Books, N. Revire éditeur) - to which he contributed an article on Khmer sculptures from Luang Prabang - as well as in the seminar that accompanies this launch.

Costantino Moretti

Costantino Moretti is in Hamburg from September 22 to 24 to take part, as session chair, in a workshop as part of the InterSaME project, organised by the University of Hamburg - Centre for the Study of Manuscript Cultures (CSMC).

On September 16, Costantino Moretti is a member of the jury of Marianne Pigoury-Julien's Master 2 thesis, Extension des récits sur le Mont clair et frais, de Yanyi, Master Études asiatiques - EPHE.

Hélène Njoto

Hélène Njoto will give a lecture at Gajah Mada University (Yogyakarta) on September 24 on the history of Islamic architecture in Yogyakarta as part of the "International Summer Course in Indonesian as a Foreign Language: Into the Exoticism of Javanese Culture" (September 16-25).

Catherine Scheer

Catherine Scheer participates in the pedagogical supervision of students at the Summer School on Social Movements in Southeast Asia held at Ca' Foscari University in Venice from September 18 to 24.

Olivier Tessier

The photographic exhibition Les marchands ambulants et les cris de la rue à Hanoi, after Hanoi, Hué and Da Nang, is reinstalled in Ho Chi Minh City by Olivier Tessier in the gallery of IDECAF (Institute of Cultural Exchanges with France) from September 15 to November 6. He will present these photographs at the inauguration on September 23.

Mélanges à la mémoire de Pandit N.R. Bhatt. Studies in Memory of Pandit N.R. Bhatt, under the direction of Pierre-Sylvain Filliozat, Dominic Goodall, Peter Pasedach, Collection Indologie 152, Pondichéry : EFEO / IFP, 521 pages.

This collection of essays honours the memory of the late Pandit N.R. Bhatt, who contributed to pioneering research into the history of Śaivism in the French institutions of research in Pondicherry, notably through his editions of Sanskrit works of the Śaivasiddhānta and through his work of gathering the largest collection of Śaiva manuscripts worldwide, recognised as a Memory of the World collection by UNESCO in 2005. After a preface about N.R. Bhatt’s life and a bibliography of his œuvre, sixteen contributions by colleagues and disciples cover aspects of the history of tantrism, of Śaiva ritual and doctrine. Two more articles deal with iconography and one last contribution publishes an eighteenth-century account of the siege of Pondicherry in 1778.

EFEO Field Scholarships

The call for applications for the EFEO Field Scholarships for the first semester of 2023 has been launched. The deadline for submitting applications for the field grant allowing Master II and doctoral students to study in Asia in one of the EFEO centres is October 13 until 6:00 p.m. (Paris time) for a stay to be planned between January 1 and June 30, 2023.

Recipients of allocation for the second semester 2022

Each year, the Fondation Pierre Ledoux – Jeunesse Internationale offers a mobility grant to some of the EFEO's fieldwork grant winners, enabling them to spend time in Asia.

This Foundation, created under the aegis of the Fondation de France in 1997 on the initiative of Pierre Ledoux, then Honorary Chairman of Banque BNP, and his wife, aims to contribute to the training of young people by enabling them to travel and broaden their human and professional horizons.

The winners of the second semester of 2022 are :

- Swann Bonnet was awarded a grant for her study of the transformation of music in North-East Thailand

- Juliette Sendra was awarded a grant for her project on the future of local cults and knowledge in the face of new economic conditions, in particular in the case of the Javanese village of Bejiharjo, in Indonesia

- Maxime Ghazarian received support for a stay in Hanoi to study the evolution of relations between the European Community and Vietnam (1977-1996)

Staff and service news

Staff

Yves Goudineau, Director of the EFEO from 2014 to 2018, and Professor (Comparative Ethnology of Southeast Asia), is retiring on September 1, 2022, and will therefore be leaving the position of head of the EFEO Center in Chiang Mai (Thailand), which he has held since 2018. He was elected "Emeritus" by the Scientific Council in March 2022 (see his biography).

Arlo Griffiths has been posted to Jakarta (Indonesia) for a period of 3 years, starting on September 1. He will be in charge of the Centre, succeeding Hélène Njoto.

Martin Nogueira-Ramos, who has been head of the EFEO Center in Kyoto since 2017, is being reassigned to France as of September 1.

On September 1 Christophe Marquet, Professor, will take over from Martin Nogueira Ramos as head of the EFEO Center in Kyoto for three years. He will coordinate the editorial board of the Cahiers d'Extrême-Asie.

After a six-month stay as Visiting Fellow at Clare Hall, University of Cambridge, Franciscus Verellen, Professor Emeritus and former Director of the EFEO, has been named a Life Member of Clare Hall.

On September 12 he will go to Berlin at the invitation of the Wissenschaftskolleg as a Fellow for the academic year 2022-2023.

Benedetta Pacini is the laureate of the doctoral contract for international cooperation of the École française d'Extrême-Orient (EFEO), call 2022.

Her dissertation project with François Lachaud and Alain Arrault at the EPHE is on "Les objets de repositoire (zōnai nōnyūhin 像內納入品): étude d'une pratique depuis ses origines jusqu'à la consécration des images dans le Japon médiéval."

Antony Boussmart, Head of the Japanese collections, is in Lisbon from 14 to 17 September to participate in the annual EAJRS (European Association of Japanese Resource Specialists) conference.

Nicole Louis-Hénard

We regret to inform you that Nicole Louis-Hénard, member of the EFEO and corresponding member of the Academie des Sciences d'Outre-Mer, passed away in Paris on August 4, 2022, in her one hundredth year.

Nicole Louis-Hénard spent the first years of her life in the bush of Central Vietnam, in the village of Lê Mon where her family lived, while her father was working on the construction of the railway from Vinh to Dông Hà. She thus participated in the visits made to Father L. Cadière, whose parish was not far from there, in Cua Tùng. She did her secondary studies at the Albert Sarraut high school in Hanoi and her higher studies in France. In 1955, she enrolled at the École des langues orientales, where she took Vietnamese courses with G. Meillon, then continued at the EPHE with M. Durand, who had her translate Phan Kê Binh's Viêt Nam Phong Tuc (1975, 1980). She was a temporary employee at the EFEO until 1964. P. B. Lafont directed her doctoral thesis, which she defended at the EPHE in 1966. She was recruited to the EFEO in 1971 and, until 1988, did research on Vietnamese history and civilisation. She lived in Saigon in 1973 to consult the archives. After her retirement in 1988, she undertook studies in psychology, with the idea of making a psychoanalytical approach to Pham Duy Kiem's Legends of the Serene Lands.

Classics Day Prize 2022

Christophe Marquet, professor of the École française d'Extrême-Orient, was awarded the Classics Day Prize on July 1st, 2022, for his contribution to the dissemination of knowledge of Japanese art in France, through his teaching, his publications, and the curating of exhibitions.

This prize was created in honor of the establishment of Classics Day (November 1st) in Japan in 2012, and it rewards institutions and persons from all over the world focusing on the genre of arts and research that contribute to the transmission of Japanese “classical” culture.

The award ceremony will take place on September 2nd, 2022 at the Kyoto Concert Hall, under the honorary presidency of Princess Akiko of Mikasa.

(Re-)discover an interview with Christophe Pottier recently broadcast on Radio Magny's "Regard'Ailleurs" programme.

Recorded in 2016, he talks about conservation, restoration and history in Angkor. He presents the EFEO, Siem Reap and the Angkor Archaeological Park. He discusses current knowledge and the prospects offered by new technologies, including Lidar.

Visit

On August 24, a delegation from Thua Thien Hue province led by Hoang Viet Trung, director of the Hue Monuments Conservation Center, and Nguyen Huy Thai was received at the EFEO headquarters by the Director of Studies, Valérie Gillet, the head of the photographic library, Isabelle Poujol, the deputy curator, Antony Boussemart, the researcher and former head of the Hanoi EFEO Center, Andrew Hardy, and the EFEO archivist, Sovannara Mey.

The aim of this delegation was, in the framework of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and France and the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the Vietnam-France strategic partnership, to visit the EFEO and to meet with the management and researchers, but also to examine the archives held by the EFEO (plans, lists of acquisitions, photos) linked to the Khai Dinh Museum (Museum of Antiquities of the Royal Court of Hué) created in 1923 by the EFEO, which will thus celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2023.

Following this visit, a cooperation agreement for the safeguarding and enhancement of the heritage of the Imperial City of Hué between the People's Committee of the province of Thua Thien Hué, the EFEO, and the French Embassy in Vietnam is being considered.
