EFEO Field Scholarships
The École française d'Extrême-Orient (EFEO) offers fieldwork grants that enable students to carry out study stays in an EFEO Centre in Asia.
Features
The
monthly allowance ranges from 700 to 1360 euros, depending on the candidate's
level (Master II, PhD student) and the country of stay.
The duration of the stay depends on the research program:
• Up to 2 months for Master II students,
• 1 to 6 months for PhD students.
Eligibility Criteria
- Must be enrolled in a research program in the humanities or social sciences, focusing on the civilizations of South Asia, Southeast Asia or East Asia.
- Must be a Master II or PhD student.
- Open to all nationalities.
- After completing the fieldwork research, the student is required to submit a report of 10 to 15 pages detailing their activities. This report should include an abstract and several images to be featured on the EFEO website.
Application
Applications may be submitted in French or English.
1. Application form to be downloaded and completed.
2. Cover letter addressed to the Director of the EFEO, specifying the desired period of stay, the relevant EFEO Center, the funding already obtained, and any other scholarships requested.
3. Letter of recommendation from the thesis or research supervisor.
4. Research project (maximum 5 pages) including the work plan, timeline, bibliography, and a budget (please note, this budget is for reference only, and the allocated monthly amount is not based on this).
5. Curriculum vitae mentioning the relevant languages for field research.
6. Proof of academic qualifications (scan of diplomas).
Submission of the Application
All documents must be compiled into a single PDF file, in the order outlined above, and sent to the following email address: appui.recherche@efeo.net.
The submission must also include a copy of a valid ID and the student ID card, to be sent separately from the PDF file.
Please note that incomplete applications will not be considered.
Deadline for Submission
The deadline for submitting applications is March 31, 2025, by 11:59 PM (Paris time), for a stay scheduled between July 1 and December 31, 2025.
IMPORTANT
The EFEO adheres to the recommendations issued by the French Ministry of Higher Education and Research, as well as those from the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs. Therefore, funding for projects will only be granted if conditions allow for the research to be conducted in accordance with the current guidelines and safety recommendations.
Please note:
- Each student may receive a maximum of 9 months of cumulative funding.
- The allowance is paid in two installments: 80% upon receipt of the boarding pass confirming arrival at the research site, and 20% upon submission of the report.
- The awardee is responsible for their round-trip travel expenses, as well as for obtaining international insurance and health coverage.
