Within the framework of the project "Light on Hatha Yoga: A critical edition and translation of the Haṭhapradīpikā, the most important premodern text on physical yoga", an AHRC and DFG project directed by James Mallinson and Jason Birch, 4 associate researchers joined the Pondicherry Centre of the EFEO. Paras Mehta, Harshal Bhat, Dibakami Krutarth and Muralikrishnan M.V. will collect, transcribe and collate manuscripts of the Haṭhapradīpikā.

A first workshop, on the Haṭhapradīpikā and stemmatic editing, was held in Marburg, organised by Prof. Jürgen Hanneder, on 21st, 22nd, and 23rd September, in which Dominic Goodall participated by videoconference.

As part of the cooperation agreement between the EFEO and the National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Véronique Degroot (EFEO) is giving a master's seminar entitled Introduction to the Archaeology and Art History of Western Indonesia at the Institute of Archaeology of NCKU. The seminar will be given online from October 15th to December 17th, 2021.

Alain Arrault

Alain Arrault is participating as a discussant in the workshop "New Research on Tenth to Fourteenth Century China", organised by Patricia Ebrey and Hilde de Weerdt in the framework of EURICS, on 15 October, at the Maison Suger, 16 rue Suger, 75006 Paris.

Alain Arrault is taking part in the colloquium on "Faits et gestes votifs" [Votive facts and gestures] co-organized by Pierre-Antoine Fabre (EHESS) in partnership with the IRN MIRACLE and the EFEO, at the Campus Condorcet on October 20th, 21st, and 23rd. He will present a paper entitled "Matérialité fugace des voeux et 'retours de vœux' dans la statuaire domestique en Chine (XVIe-XXe siècles)".

On October 15th, Élisabeth Chabanol will lead the master 2 course of the Faculty of Letters of the Institut Catholique de Paris "L'art des marges dans le monde chinois", whose supervisor is Arnaud Bertrand, on the theme "The art of Korea through an exhibition: Pyongyang-Kaesong 2014-2015".

From 28th to 31st of October, Élisabeth Chabanol is participating in the 30th conference of the Association for Korean Studies in Europe, which is being held at the University of La Rochelle.

She is the organizer of the panel "Kaesong/Kanghwa: rediscovery of the tangible cultural heritage of the two Koryŏ capitals" in which Yannick Bruneton (University of Paris), Sem Vermeersch (Seoul National University) and Moon Ok-hyun (Ganghwa National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage) are participating on October 31st from 10:30 to 12:30.

On October 4th and 5th, Frédéric Girard takes part in the colloquium "L'apport des missions chrétiennes: Échange des connaissances avec l'Asie", organised by ASOM and ARSOM in Brussels. He will speak on 5 October from 12:50 to 13:15 on "La nomenclature philosophique dans le Japon des XVIe-XVIIe siècles".

On Saturday 23rd October, Dominic Goodall will be chairing a panel, by videoconference, at the 49th Annual Conference on South Asia in Madison, Wisconsin, held from 20th to 24th of October 2021. Entitled "Sacred Spaces, Holy Tongues: South Indian Temple Legends Revisited", the panel includes scholars from Heidelberg (Ute Huesken, Jonas Buchholz, Malini Ambach, Ofer Peres) speaking about the temple legends of Kancheepuram.

On October 9th, François Lachaud will speak on the topic "Quelques remarques à propos de l'image des fauves dans la peinture zen: autour de Sengai" (Zenga ni okeru mōjūzō ni kansuru ichi kōsatu: Sengai wo chūshin ni) at the international colloquium "Aspects et caractéristiques de la culture zen" (Zenbunka no shosō to sono tokushitsu) held at the International Center for Research on Zen.

François Lachaud will take part on October 30th in the first meeting of the research group on the Henri Cordier Collection, on deposit since 2021 at the Tōyō bunko. Henri Cordier (1849-1925) was one of the most important French orientalists and linguists who played a decisive role in the history of East and Central Asian studies in France and Europe. The collection, which belonged to the Hosokawa family and was housed in the Eisei bunko, contains more than 5000 volumes. Each month, a work from this collection will be presented by a researcher.

On October 2nd, Hélène Njoto is the moderator of Webinar 7 "Indianisation and Indigenisation of Southeast Asian Hindu and Buddhist Architecture" presented by Prof. Chotima Chaturawong, part of the Archaeology and Art History of Southeast Asia Programme of which she is co-organiser.

The deadline for submitting an application to an EFEO Field Scholarships for Master and PhD students enabling a field study in Asia at one of the EFEO centers is set to the 14th of October 2021.

On 22nd of October he will visit the Museum Rietberg in Zürich to study the Ōtsu-e paintings and surimono related to this genre in its collections. On the 23rd he will attend the colloquium "Storytelling in Japan" on the occasion of the current exhibition "Love, Fight, Feast - the World of Japanese Narrative Art".

On 27th and 28th of October, he will attend the study days organised by INALCO and BULAC in conjunction with the exhibition "Écriture japonaise : concevoir des caractères typographiques. Histoire, origines et développements" which is being held on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the BULAC.

Christophe Pottier will give a presentation entitled "Current research in Angkor human settlements: an overview" on October 14 at the invitation of Professor Kurt H. Kjær, Lundbeck Foundation GeoGenetics Centre, Globe Institute, University of Copenhagen.

The conditions of access are as follows:

- The library will be open Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

- It will no longer be necessary to reserve a place in the reading room, but you will have to be registered or pre-registered on the Bulac catalogue for the "Maison de l'Asie"

- The documents will be communicated 20 minutes after their reservation from your reader's account, and will be made available on the shelves on the patio side of the reading room

- The library will welcome 15 readers per day. In case of overcrowding, priority will be given to readers consulting EFEO documents

The Paris library of the EFEO has just published the inventory of the archives of Bernard Philippe Groslier (1926-1986) on its website dedicated to the description and management of digitized archives and collections as well as on Calames.

An archaeologist specializing in Khmer art, Bernard Philippe Groslier was a member of the EFEO from 1951 onwards and curator of Angkor from 1959 to 1975.

The library has also just published on its archives website and on Calames its inventory of the parish and civil status registers of the Parish of Notre-Dame-des-Anges in Pondicherry.

Those archives are copies of registers of births, marriages and deaths, dated from 1815 to 1956.

Thanks to a year-long project lead by Camilla Masullo, a student in Master 2 "Archives" from the University Paris 8 Vincennes Saint-Denis (UFR Textes et sociétés, Département Histoire), the inventory online of the EFEO administrative and scientific archives.

These archives represent 40 linear meters of documents, constituted since the foundation of the EFEO in 1898, and document
- the activities of the direction (management and organisation) during the Indochinese and Parisian periods,
- the collaboration with scientific institutes (universities, museums, schools, etc.) and their members at international scale,
- the scientific activities (archaeological department, ethnological and linguistic department),
- the members’ works,
- and the administration of museums in Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos.

For two months the library welcomed Sybille Ngo, a trainee from EHESS (Master's degree in Asian studies), who was in charge of the inventory of the Arrault-Bussotti collection on the EFEO archives website and on Calames.

Collected between 1986 and 2002 in the People's Republic of China and donated in 2020 by EFEO researchers Alain Arrault and Michela Bussotti, this collection brings together representations of deities, popular images, offering papers, xylographic plates, photographic documentation, and collections of prints.

Discover the new virtual exhibition "Lisu from Thailand" which features the Otome Klein photographic collection. This exhibition is divided into three parts:
- life in the village, punctuated by daily tasks,
- the symbolism of places, from the house, through the village, to the surrounding forest,
- the question of gender, between cross-dressing and the distribution of tasks according to whether one is male or female.

Otome Klein, born in 1930 in the Netherlands, has dedicated much of her career as an anthropologist to the study of the tribal populations of Northern Thailand and the collection of their traditional crafts. Her particular inclination for the Lisu led her to share their daily life in the village of Doi Laan (Chiang Rai province) between 1982 and 1987. This experience gave rise to one of her major works: Emerging sexual inequality among the Lisu of northern Thailand.

The Mémoires de l'École française d'Extrême-Orient collection has been enriched this year with a new volume devoted to India, some of whose photographs are being presented at the "Mémoires de l'Inde" exhibition.

"Whatever the period or the author - from the glass plates of the Faucheux brother from the beginning of the 20th century to the colour photographs of Luc Ionesco taken in the 1960s - these images give a special place to the human being and capture the alternately proud, laughing, concentrated or ecstatic looks of their subjects. Moreover, they engage in a fruitful dialogue with the archaeological dimension of the photo library's collections and highlight the profound symbiosis between stone and flesh. From one image to the next, the boundary is lost between the bodies of men, women and deities: the graceful pose of a god merges with that of his devotee, the intensely white eyes of a fierce village guard are reflected in those of a young Brahmin, black and piercing. Committed to the ways of the past, crowds gather at the exit of a shrine, dancing, toiling, accompanying the gods to the water, while new paths are opened by the first generations of schoolboys and schoolgirls of independent India, carrying with them the hopes of Prime Minister Nehru."

On the occasion of the annual seminar of the Écoles françaises à l'étranger, held in Rome on September 28 and 29, on the theme of their collaborations with museum institutions, the Réseau des Écoles françaises à l'étranger - ResEFE - has designed a documentary exhibition entitled "Les Écoles françaises à l'étranger et les musées : recherche et collaborations" presenting the diversity of the partnerships of these research and research training establishments with museums, in France and abroad.

At the École française de Rome (piazza Navona 62, Rome), from  September 28 to November 6 2021, Monday to Friday from 9am to 6pm, Saturday from 9am to 1pm (closed on Monday 1st November 2021). Free admission.

The Réseau des Écoles françaises à l'Étranger - ResEFE - is present at the 24th Rendez-vous de l'histoire in Blois during the Carte blanche for the Réseau des Écoles françaises à l'étranger: "Les chercheurs sur leur terrain de travail : questions sociales et environnementales". Christophe Pottier, for the EFEO, will present "Vivre et travailler dans les temples d'Angkor au XXe siècle".
