The golden letter of Myanmar King Alaungmintaya
On 18 January Jacques Leider held a lecture on the golden letter, Myanmar King Alaungmintaya's letter to George II, at the official presentation of the unique document at the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Bibliothek in Hannover. Addressing an audience of over 450 people among whom Ministerpräsident David McAllister, members of the diplomatic corps and the academia, Jacques Leider presented the letter's historical context focusing on the rivalry between the kingdom of Pegu and the Myanmar/Burmese kingdom in the north. His research paper, based on work done between 2007 and 2009 in Great Britain and Yangon (King Alaungmintaya's Golden Letter to King George II (7 May 1756) : The story of an exceptional manuscript and the failure of an diplomatic overture. Hannover: Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Bibliothek, 2009. 141 p.) can be freely downloaded at
