PRESENTATION
Golden Letter
18 JANUARY 11
On 18 January, Jacques Leider delivered a lecture on the golden letter at the official presentation of this unique Myanmar manuscript in Hanover, Germany. Over 450 people attended the event among whom were the Ministerpräsident Mr David McAllister, members of the diplomatic corps and academics. The golden letter is King Alaungmintaya's letter to King George II of Great Britain, dated 7 May 1756, in which the Myanmar king offered the English a message of friendship looking forward to prosperous commercial relations and lasting friendship between the kings and their descendants. The letter was kept since 1758 in the formerly royal library of Hanover, now the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Bibliothek. Unfortunately the library's register and the nineteenth century printed catalogue did not present the true identity of the exquisite document until 2007 when Jacques Leider identified the manuscript. Jacques Leider's research paper on the golden letter can be freely downloaded at http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:gbv:35-00000303-13
