Title:
"A tale of two rivers": the Musi and the Batang in (late) Srivijayan time
Date:
2023. 05. 24 (Wednesday) 10:00-12:00
Venue:
Room 201, Institute of Archaeology, Li-Hsing Campus, NCKU
Abstract:
Srivijaya is an almost mythical Indonesian kingdom that used to be the siege of a world-famous Buddhist university. But it is also an elusive polity with rather vague geographical and political contours. During two hours, I propose to travel up the course of the two rivers that form its core, the Musi and the Batang Hari. We will visit the archaeological sites of Bumiayu and Muara Jambi, discuss the traditional model of settlement pattern and see whether a comparative study of these two river systems can shed some light on the history of 9th – 14th c. Srivijaya.
