Title:
A New China in Mexico: “Preserving the race” in the early 20th century political imagination

Date:
Tuesday, November 22, 2022 at 2:30 pm

Venue:
Room 703, Research Building, IHP, Academia Sinica

Abstract:
After going into exile in 1898, Kang Youwei planned to bring Chinese migrant workers to Mexico, and used to refer to this project as “New China”. How does this project embody Kang Youwei’s nationalist ideas?
And how does it fit with more general social transformations on the two sides of the Northern Pacific Ocean? We will show that the “New China” project represented a new practical interpretation of an earlier idea, “preserving the race,”
and that it emerged from the concrete experiences that Kang Youwei and other members of the Chinese Empire Reform Association had on both sides of the Northern Pacific Ocean. The “New China” project was not only related to the way these nationalists understood the situation in China, but also to the way they dealt with the reconfiguration of the world's political and economic relations in the late 19th and early 20th century.

The talk will be chaired by Dr. CHEN Hsi-yuan, Research Fellow, Institute of History
and Philology, Academia Sinica
The talk will be given in Chinese. Registration is not required.
With the support of the French Office in Taipei (BFT).
