摘要:
In Indonesia, the first significant archaeological excavations of old settlements from the historical period were undertaken in the mid-1970s at Kota Cina, located in northeast Sumatra, on the Strait of Malacca between Medan and Belawan. They were soon followed by investigations conducted by archaeologists from the National Centre for Archaeological Research of Indonesia until 1979. These pioneering researches, albeit based on limited excavations, revealed remains of several brick structures and large quantities of artefacts, confirming the importance of the site following earlier or contemporary discoveries of Buddhist and Hindu stone and bronze images. Moreover, a few years later remains of two vessels built according to the Southeast Asian lashed-lug construction technique were found nearby. Based on these finds, a late eleventh‒early fourteenth century CE dating was suggested.Although not forgotten, no other archaeological excavations were conducted at Kota Cina until 2010. Intensive new archaeological research at Kota Cina took place between 2011 and 2016 under the auspices of a French-Indonesian archaeological project. As the collective volumes related to this project have just been published, this talk will present an overview of the finds, as well as reflections on the place of Kota Cina in the history of the region, and more broadly in the relations between the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea.
