We are delighted to announce the publication of D'un empire, l'autre : premières rencontres entre la France et le Japon au XIXe siècle [Empire to Empire: First Encounters between France and Japan in the Nineteenth Century] (EFEO).

This multi-authored volume, which is edited by Martin Nogueira Ramos (EFEO Kyoto) and François Lachaud (EFEO Tokyo), brings together eight essays on the first (real or imagined) contacts between France and Japan in the nineteenth century. The authors are from Japan, France, and the UK. The project originates from a symposium organized at the Maison franco-japonaise in November 2018 for the 160th anniversary of the first diplomatic treaty between Japan and France (October 1858).
