The École française d’Extrême-Orient (EFEO) and the Scuola Italiana di Studi sull'Asia Orientale (ISEAS) launched in November 2018 a new series of lectures in partnership with the Institute for Research in Humanities (Kyoto University).

This series focuses on religious teaching and preaching in Early Modern Japan with the aim to promote dialogue among students and scholars doing research on Japanese religious history from different nationalities and institutional backgrounds.
 
For 2018-2019 six talks are on schedule, all in Japanese.
 
The 4th talk will be held on the 12th of April at the EFEO Kyoto Center with Niels van Steenpaal (Kyoto University) as a guest speaker.

「施印」というメディア―近世後期京都「孝学所」施印の流通と意味―

「施印」とは何か。教化目的で無料配布された印刷物という大雑把な定義は定着しているようだが、その作成・形態・内容・流通・受容などの総体は不明のままである。しかし、施印はどの書物よりも大量かつ広範囲で流通し、近世社会を隅々まで染み渡るメディアであったため、その全貌の究明が大きな課題であると考える。
本発表では、近世後期京都の水火天満宮境内にあった「孝学所」を事例に、二つの問題を解明していきたい。第一に、無料で提供された施印とは、書肆や市場経済の「見えざる手」を借りられない状況のもと、どのような手段で読者の手に届けられたのか。第二に、私費を投じてでも世に届けたい、と思わせる施主の志とはいかなるものであったのか。
資本原理を象徴する商業出版を前提とする従来の研究に、社会原理に駆り立てられた「施印」の視点を加えることにより、バランスの取れた近世書物文化史を目指す。
