Submitting the manuscript of a book

The following text is intended to introduce authors and prospective authors to the EFEO Press and its publishing procedures.

Query letter

Before submitting the manuscript itself, you should first send a query letter to the editorial committee of the EFEO.

This query letter should mention (1) the subject of your manuscript; (2) the collection you wish for your publication; (3) your general approach; (4) approximate length in double-spaced manuscript pages, and number and type of illustrations; (5) your qualifications; (6) your answer to the question: "Would you accept an electronic publication only?"; please attach to this query letter 7) a summary of your text in French and English and 8) a full list of its contents. This query letter may indicate, whether or not a subsidy has been obtained for publishing the work.

Please note that unrevised dissertations cannot be considered.

Submission of your manuscript

Your letter will be reviewed by the EFEO's in-house editorial board.

If you are invited to submit the manuscript, you should prepare it according to the editorial guidelines that will be sent to you at that time. The final decision to publish will normally be based on the evaluation of a complete manuscript.

Remarks:

  • Submission of a manuscript implies that it has not been simultaneously proposed elsewhere or if it was, this should be reported.
  • Permission to reproduce illustrations, maps, diagrams, long quotations from works published outside the EFEO should already have been obtained by the author and the author should provide a copy of these permissions. Please note that the EFEO will not request permission to reproduce documents on behalf of the author.

Review of the manuscript, decision to publish

Once your manuscript has been received at the EFEO Press, it will be reviewed both by the Press editorial board and by inside or outside specialists in your field in strict anonymity (authors and experts). Scholarly manuscripts published by the EFEO Press must receive at least two favourable reader-reports by internal or external reviewers and be accepted by the EFEO Publication Committee. It sometimes happens, however, that the reviewers will be encouraging but will recommend further work before the manuscript is ready to be accepted for publication.

When acceptance is final, the author will be asked to comply fully with the recommendations and ensure the submission of a revised final manuscript in a timely manner. The editorial work will only start after the delivery of this complete and final manuscript. If you have not yet furnished authorisations obtained for the reproduction of copyrighted material, you must do so at this stage.

Once your manuscript has been accepted, you will be offered a publishing contract that spells out the reciprocal responsibilities of the EFEO Press and the author(s).

In some cases, a scholarly monograph is published in a small print run for a limited audience. Sometimes the cost of editing and printing might be too high to be supported only by the EFEO Press. If that is the case with your book, you may be asked to help find a subvention for the project or a co-editor.

To whom should a query letter or manuscript be submitted?

Your query letter should be sent to the editorial committee of the EFEO, represented by the Director of publications and the publication office.

Pilot project ''Safeguarding for Posterity Two Private Collections of Palm-Leaf Manuscripts from the Tamil Country (EAP1294)''
Pondicherry, India, 13 September 2021
The pilot project "Safeguarding for Posterity Two Private Collections of Palm-Leaf Manuscripts from the Tamil Country (EAP1294)" has been awarded a grant under the British Library's Endangered Archives Program, supported by the Arcadia Fund!

Suganya Anandakichenin (PI), Giovanni Ciotti (University of Hamburg) and S. A. S. Sarma (EFEO, Pondicherry) lead this ten-month project (August 2021-May 2022) aims to clean, digitize, and catalogue a portion of about 180 manuscripts belonging to two collections (called "Kalliṭaikuṟicci" and Villiampākkam).

These manuscripts, many of which date from the mid-19th century, contain texts of various genres, in Tamil, Sanskrit and Manipravalam, written in Tamil and Grantha. Previously neglected, these relics of the past will give us a clear idea of the reading and study choices of a Tamil and Vishnu Brahmin scholarly family from the 19th century onwards. Work on the project is currently underway at the EFEO Center in Pondicherry.
