End of the reconstruction of Tōyō bunko and opening of museum
17 OCTOBER 11
The building of Tōyō bunko which was in reconstruction since November 2008, finished in October 2011, after two years and eleven months of work. On the October 17th, 2011, there was a ceremony and a party celebrating the opening of the new building and that of the museum, with the restaurant. The new Museum of Tōyō bunko permanently exhibits the whole George E. Morrison’s library, which was at the origin of Tōyō bunko’s collection. It exhibits other treasures in possession of Tōyō bunko, such as the world most extensive collection of editions of the book of Marco Polo, precious ukiyoes or other old manuscripts of Chinese classics or Buddhist books. There is also a new restaurant, named “Orient Café” where visitors can enjoy excellent meals, and a museum shop where they can purchase cards and other goods.
The Library is open all the workdays, from 9am to 4pm; the Museum and the Restaurant are open all days except Tuesday, from 10am to 8pm.
