The Cult of Saints in a Muslim Community in Gansu: Between Resistance and Transformation (1980-2020)

Abstract:
The cult of saints is one of the most specific aspects of Sufi Islam on a global scale. In this presentation, the different practices that shape the cult of saints in a Muslim religious community in Gansu will be examined. Using ethnographic material collected in the field, I will attempt to understand the evolution of these practices, between resistance and transformation, in the context of the phenomena of urbanization and patrimonialization spanning the last four decades.
