The great Hindu temple of Prambanan was built in the mid-9th century as mirror image and rival of Borobudur – the largest Buddhist monument of its time. After a brief reminder of the philosophical bases of classical Hinduism, we will let the architecture, the reliefs and the sculptures of Prambanan tell us about the cosmology, the gods and the mythology of 9th c. Java. We will see how the temple was brought alive and served as encounter place between worlds. And why some of its features are still a matter of debate among specialists.
