摘要: As people of other nations, the Chinese also made use of the sea.  They
invented or adopted several methods to fast reach destinations or avoid risks.  In
this talk, I will examine some varieties of map and chart that contain information to help the sea-farers.  For example, I’ll use the “Selden Map” and the Huang Qianren Map of China (DaQing Wannian Yitong Tianxia Quantu) to demonstrate the Chinese way of showing sea routes.  In addition, several versions of “maps with configuration of landmasses and depiction of (under) water conditions” (coastal profiles) will also be
discussed.  Finally, Chinese aids to navigation, including lighthouse, beacon, and spar buoy will also be examined.
