Lecture by Dr R. Sathyanarayanan (EFEO Pondicherry) at the World Sanskrit Conference
05 JANUARY 12
R. Sathyanarayanan (EFEO Pondicherry) has delivered a paper at the 15th World Sanskrit Conference held at New Delhi from 5th to 10th January 1012.
Title: Similarities and Dissimilarities Between Śaivas and Smārta Prāyascittas
Summary: This presentation discussed the similarities between the śaiva and smārta prāyaścitta-s, how they have borrowed from each other's corpuses (vaidika and tāntrika) and the reasons for this.
Ritual prescriptions for an offence are given in both vaidika and tāntrika texts. However, they contain different prescriptions for the same offence. One of the main divergence between these two system is that the smārta prāyaścitta uses Vedic passages for reparatory procedures, whereas the śaiva prāyaścitta predominantly uses the five Brahmamantra-s (tatpuruṣa, aghora, sadyojāta, vāmadeva and īśāna). To highlight the above, a comparision has been made between the two traditions with reference to the five great sins, punarupanayanam and punardīkṣā, impurity of touch and several other ritual details.
