The EFEO Center in Pune, Maharashtra, the great university city of western India known under the British as Poona, was set up in 1964. The establishment of the EFEO on the campus of Deccan College, a distinguished teaching and research institution well-known for its rich library resources, was formalized under an agreement between the two institutions signed in 1997.

At the outset the aim of the Center was primarily to further studies on modern Indo-Aryan languages and literature. Since the early 1990's the Center has also hosted research in several areas.

Current research program:

  • Sanskrit treatises on logic and exegesis
  • Contemporary religions
  • The Maratha language
  • Indian treatises on mathematics

Work has also been carried out on the application of new technologies to philology, especially the adaptation of computer Internet languages (html, xml, xsl, etc.) to Sanskrit and other Indian languages.

The Center also houses a collection of Marathi literature and basic reference works for Indian studies. Visiting scholars including fellowship holders and doctoral candidates also have access to the library resources of Deccan College.

Death of Bruno Dagens
Strasbourg, France, 17 September 2023
It is with great sorrow that we have learned the passing of Professor Bruno Dagens on September 17, 2023. He was a member of the EFEO from 1969 to 1986. A renowned specialist in India and Cambodia, many of us followed his teaching of the history of Cambodian art at the Sorbonne-Nouvelle University (Paris-III). Our thoughts are with his family and friends.
