Fourth International Intensive course in Old Javanese

Yogyakarta, Central Java, Indonesia - 15 through 29 July 2018

 

Co-organized by the National Library of the Republic of Indonesia (Perpusnas) and the École française d'Extrême-Orient (EFEO), with support from the École Pratique des Hautes Études (EPHE), PSL Research University (Paris), and the Royal Netherlands Institute for Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies (KITLV).

Aiming to support the training of a new generation of Old Javanese philologists and to stimulate international collaboration in this field, the École française d'Extrême-Orient (French School of Asian Studies, EFEO) and the National Library of the Republic of Indonesia (Perpusnas), with support from the École Pratique des Hautes Études (Paris), PSL Research University (Paris), and the Royal Netherlands Institute for Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies (KITLV), will co-organize this year, for the fourth time, an international intensive course in Old Javanese.

Concept

An academic retreat lasting 15 days attended by 27 students who will be guided in intensive manner by 3 specialists of Old Javanese philology. The program will take place in typical Javanese natural surroundings while the learning experience will be enriched by excursions to vestiges of ancient Hindu and Buddhist civilization in Central Java.

Aim

The student who has completed the intensive course is able independently to read and analyze Old Javanese texts and is aware of the available research tools (Dictionaries, Grammars, etc.).

Location

The program will take place on at Cangkringan Jogja Villa & Spa in Yogyakarta, Central Java.

Dates

The program will take place from 15 through 29 July, 2018.

Teachers

The team of teachers is composed of Willem van der Molen (KITLV, Leiden), Dwi Puspitorini (UI, Depok) and Andrea Acri (EPHE, Paris).

Course content

The first five days we will focus on intensive study of Old Javanese grammar, after which, during the second five days, we will read representative samples of four principal genres of the Old Javanese textual corpus: Parwa, Kakawin and Tutur/Tattwa.

Language of Instruction

English.

Participants

We will admit about 18 participants from Indonesian universities or other institutions. We also welcome about 9 foreign scholars of Sanskrit or other related fields, or foreign graduate students, who wish to learn Old Javanese.

Admission

Admission will proceed through selection on the basis of an application file, which should consist of:

  • your CV
  • a statement of motivation explaining your interest in participation
  • clear evidence of solid command of English (such as a TOEFL score)
  • if relevant a reasoned request for financial support toward your international travel costs

    Admission for foreign as well as Indonesia participants will be open from the date of publication of this announcement until 15 May 2018.

    Costs

    This course is free of cost. Participants are expected to travel on their own expense to Adi Sutjipto International Airport in Yogyakarta. We will provide pick-up at Adisutjipto airport and Yogyakarta Station (Tugu Station), and your arrival at either of these meeting points should be timed in consultation with the committee.
